Now that we are just under a month away from the June 5th vote on Proposition 29, No on 29 - Californians Against Out-of-Control Taxes and Spending, has launched their television and radio campaign. It is imperative that you know the facts about Prop 29. Below I have listed some key concerns about this proposition and I invite you to research it yourself, you can get additional facts by visiting www.noon29.com and http://readforyourself.org.

Prop 29 is opposed by the California Chamber of Commerce, The California Taxpayer Association and the Los Angeles Times. Please talk to your family, friends and neighbors and let's stop Sacramento from creating this ill-conceived slush fund that will benefit no one but Legislators and their friends!

PROP. 29 IS A FLAWED AND POORLY DRAFTED MEASURE

" If Prop. 29 passes, you will pay MUCH more for your cigars and pipe tobacco. These products are already very highly taxed in California, at a rate of 31.73%, and will go up to 54.89% if Prop. 29 passes;

" Prop. 29 will raise taxes in California by $735 million a year, yet it will do absolutely nothing to solve the state's $10+ billion budget deficit. Instead, money raised by Prop. 29's new taxes will be spent on research, with spending decisions made by a bureaucratic committee that will not be accountable to voters or to the state legislature;

" California has a $10+ billion deficit and voters are being threatened with cuts to schools or higher taxes.

WE CAN'T FUND EXISTING PROGRAMS, YET PROP. 29 RAISES TAXES TO CREATE A WHOLE NEW GOVERNMENT SPENDING PROGRAM;

" Doesn't require new tax revenue be spent in California to create jobs. Money can be spent out of state or even out of the country;

" Supporters claim it will help save billions in healthcare costs, but the measure provides no new funding for treating cancer patients;

" Spends $125 million annually on overhead, bureaucracy, buildings and real estate-money that could be used for cancer research;

" Permits conflicts of interest by allowing organizations represented by Commissioners to receive taxpayer funding. Allows for-profit corporations to receive $500+ million in taxpayer dollars annually;

" Each year, the federal government spends $6 billion on cancer research and California spends $70 million on tobacco control programs. Prop. 29 duplicates these existing programs;

" Prohibits the Governor and Legislature from making changes to the initiative for 15 years, even in the case of fraud or waste. It's a bad idea to create another commission and give it $735 million annually with no accountability for how it spends the money;

A California voter-approved Constitutional amendment requires that any new taxes help pay for education, but Prop. 29 exempts itself from this requirement, shortchanging our schools by $300+ million per year.
